Australia’s Northern Territory is known for its remote open spaces, exotic wildlife, extreme weather, and eccentric characters, but especially for its rich heritage of Aboriginal art and culture.
The presentation will focus on the award-winning Aboriginal art and culture tour that the Manyallaluk community operated for about twenty years. The tours introduced visitors to traditional bush food and medicine, spear throwing, basket making, painting using natural pigments, didgeridoo playing and fire making. Tourists watched demonstrations and tried their hand at all these activities and could ask questions about culture and listen to dreamtimes stories. The tours included overnight camping in the nearby rocky escarpment county that abounds with rock pools, wildlife and hundreds of Aboriginal rock paintings dating back centuries.
Kathleen and her husband Ron Ball lived and worked at Manyallaluk for six years, Ron as tour guide and driver, Kathleen as coordinator of the art and craft center. This presentation will give a snapshot of Manyallaluk’s Aboriginal people in the community and their art and traditions.
